The board houses a TCRT5000 sensor head consisting of a 950nm infrared emitting diode and an NPN phototransistor encased in a compact plastic enclosure that blocks ambient visible light.
When the module passes over a reflective surface (such as white paper), emitted infrared light bounces back into the phototransistor, pulling the sensor output high. Conversely, when passing over a light-absorbing non-reflective surface (such as a black electrical tape line), the IR beam is absorbed, lowering phototransistor conductivity. The onboard LM393 comparator IC compares this signal against a user-adjusted threshold set via a precision potentiometer, triggering a clean HIGH/LOW digital signal on the DO pin.
